Vibrations: Simple harmonic motion and damped S.H.M, and forced vibrations. Waves: propagation of waves in a medium. The wave equation and its solution of a wave as a function of two variables: x=Acos(ωt-kz) Superposition of waves: phasor method (Fresnel's construction), Interference of two waves of same frequency, Beats, and standing waves. Phase and group velocities. Sound waves: Sound level and intensity. Doppler effect. Reflection and refraction of light: Nature of light, index of refraction, optical path, Fermat's principle and the derivation of the laws of reflection and refraction. Total internal reflection. Spherical interfaces: principle plane, optical axis, cardinal points, paraxial rays. Optical components: flat and spherical mirrors, lenses, prisms, and aberration.
